The Celtic – Viking Premier Super Football Cup

The Celtic – Viking Premier Super Football Cup

Here is an idea for a football trophy on top of domestic leagues, and UEFA competitions.

A cup trophy played between sides from the Celtic and Viking nations.

The combined population is massive.

It would be a fun trophy between the smaller Northern European nations.

My idea would be to have all Scottish Premier sides, plus selected sides from Celtic nations of Wales, Cornwall, the Isle of Man, Brittany, Northern Ireland, and the Republic of Ireland.

The Viking nations would include Sweden, Finland, Norway, Denmark, Russia, the Faroe Islands, Iceland, Normandy, Ukraine, Russia, Estonia, and Greenland.

The trophy could be a group stage trophy of 11 teams in each group. Each team playing each other once.  Each team would be drawn with 5 home games and 5 away games.

The combined populations would be;

Celtic Lands.

Scotland, 5.4 million.

Wales, 3.1 million.

Northern Ireland, 1.8 million.

Republic of Ireland, 4.9 million.

Isle of Man, 80,000.

Cornwall, 500,000.

Brittany, 4.5 million.

Combined population, 20.3 million people.

The Viking Countries Not including countries included in the Celtic lands,

Sweden, 10.3 million.

Denmark,5.8 million.

Norway, 5.3 million.

Finland, 5.5 million.

Iceland, 360,000.

Greenland, 56,000.

Faroe Islands, 52,000.

Normandy, 3.3 million.

Russia, 142.6 million.

Ukraine, 41.5 million.

Estonia, 1.3 million.

Combined population. Over 215 million.

The Viking nations list is excluding nations like Brittany, Normandy, the Isle of Man, and Scotland which were already counted in the Celtic lands total.

So the total population of the nations in the Celtic – Viking Cup would be 235 million.

It could be a massive trophy to attract global football audiences. The major European leagues would be unlikely to enter teams except the small French sides.

From Scotland sides like Glasgow Celtic, Glasgow Rangers, Aberdeen, Heart of Midlothian, Hibernian and Dundee United could enter,

From Wales sides like Cardiff City, Connah’s Quay Nomads, Newport County, Wrexham and Swansea City could enter.

From Sweden sides like IFK Goteborg, Helsingborgs IF, IFK Norrköping, AIK Stockholm, and Malmo could enter,

From Norway s ides like Rosenborg, Viking Stavanger, Fredrikstad FK and Molde could enter,

From Russia, sides like Spartak Moscow, Dynamo Moscow, Lokomotiv Moscow, Zenit Saint Petersburg, Rostov and CSKA Moscow could enter.

From the Ukraine, Dynamo Kiev, Shakhtar Donetsk, and Dnipro could enter.

From Brittany sides like FC Nantes, the Stade Rennais F.C., the FC Lorient, the Stade Brestois 29, the Vannes OC and the En Avant de Guingamp could enter.

From Normandy teams like AS Cherbourg Football, Le Havre AC, US Quevilly-Rouen, US Avranches could take part.

From the island of Ireland teams like Linfield, Derry City, St Patrick's Athletic, Bohemian, Shamrock Rovers, Dundalk, Cork City and Shelbourne could take part.

From Cornwall, Truro City could take part.

From Iceland teams like Valur, KR could take part,

From Finland teams like Haka, and HJK could take part.

From Denmark teams like Copenhagen, Brondby and FC Midtjylland could enter.

Purpose of the trophy.

To create a trophy that the smaller European football powers could produce winners of. At present the big nations dominate the European football trophies. So this could allow Scottish, Russian, Ukrainian, Swedish, and Danish teams to win the trophy.

This would be a massive trophy, but could be organised in a simple way.

I know travel would be tough. But the draw could be regionalised. So the group stages are regional, but the knockout rounds are non-regionalised. With teams drawing teams from anywhere in the knockout stages.

I think this would be a fun trophy to give big Scottish sides, some big sides to play each season.

Sides from Russia, France, Sweden, and Ukraine would get the chance of compete against top foreign sides.,

It would help the smaller football leagues grow and develop their teams.

So countries like Ireland, Wales, and Finland could see their teams grow from playing in this trophy.

From a Scottish point of view it could enable teams to play glamorous teams from all over Europe.

I know travel would be tough, but look at the distances travelled in the sporting leagues of the USA, Canada, Australia, China, Russia, Japan, Brazil, Mexico, and Argentina,

This would be a fun trophy of top and small sides.

The Celtic – Viking region is a large population. So combining these regions for a football trophy would be fun.

The Celtic nations have some passionate fans, and patriotic peoples.

The Viking lands cover a huge population.

So this would be a massive market for big soccer sides.

Scotland would benefit from massively increasing it’s market.
