Regionalising the 3rd and 4th Tiers of Scottish Football.

Regionalising the 3rd and 4th Tiers of Scottish Football.

At present the 3rd and 4th tiers are League One and League Two,

At present they are national divisions. With the 3rd and 4th tier being capable of having teams from northern or southern Scotland.

One idea could be cut down on travel, and increase the derby games to merge League One and League Two and then divide them again between north and south divisions.

If we did this it would mean less travelling for some clubs, which would be good at cutting the road transport use of Scottish football for fans and players.

So perhaps we could regionalise the third and fourth tiers to have a League One North, and  a League One South,

At Present-

In the Scottish League One at present are Airdrieonians, Cove Rangers, Dumbarton, East Fife, Falkirk, Forfar Athletic, Montrose, Partick Thistle, Peterhead,

In the Scottish League Two at present are Albion Rovers, Annan Athletic, Brechin City, Cowdenbeath, Edinburgh City, Elgin City, Queen's Park, Stenhousemuir, Stirling Albion, Stranraer.

Roughly this means that if the leagues were merged, then split between Scottish League One North and Scottish League South.

The League One North would contain something like Cove Rangers, Cowdenbeath, East Fife, Forfar Athletic, Montrose, Brechin City, Elgin City,  Stenhousemuir, Peterhead, Stirling Albion,

The League One South would contain something like Airdrieonians, Dumbarton, Edinburgh City, Partick Thistle, Albion Rovers, Annan Athletic,  Edinburgh City, Queen's Park, Stranraer. Falkirk,

This would keep regional derbies in the north like Cove Rangers v Peterhead or Elgin City. Also Brechin City v Montrose or Forfar.

Regional derbies in the south like Stranraer, v Annan, Another derby would be Partick v Queen's Park.

The organisation in a normal season could be play each team in your league four times. Two away and two at home. Plus the top teams from each league could be given automatic promotion to the second tier. While the next few teams could enter play offs to get promotion of to the second tier.

The second tier would need to provide at least two relegated clubs, plus perhaps a team to play in the play offs against the play off qualifiers from League One North and League One South.

Relegation from the League One North and League One South, could be decided by a play off. The bottom team from the north and the bottom team from the south could play a two leg play off. With the loser of that having to play a play off against the best non league side in Scotland.

At present the Lowland and Highland Leagues champions have a play off to decide the best non league side in Scotland.

This would not change under my idea, except they would play the losers of the League One North and League One South relegation play off. It would be fun, and change.

It would cut travel, and mean more local derbies, normally.
