What about a Welsh Super Cup at soccer?
What about a new idea called the Welsh Super Cup between the champions of the
Welsh Top division, and the Winners of the Welsh FA Cup?
This trophy could be like a Welsh version of Super Cups
played all over Europe.
Th Italians, Spanish, Polish, Portugal, the French, the Belgians, and the Germans have Super Cups played between the League Champs, and the national Cup Winners. Other countries in Europe do the same.
The English have a Community Shield (formerly known as the Charity Shield)
played between the winners of the English Premier League and the English FA Cup.
The League of Ireland have the President’s Cup which is
the same as the Super Cup.
They do not have one in Scotland. Probably because it would just be Glasgow Celtic v Glasgow Rangers too many times.
In Wales, a Super Cup, could start each season, with a high-quality game, so getting teams ready for European football games.
The game could be played at the home of the previous year’s Welsh Champions, to ensure that it does not need to be held at a neutral venue. As a neutral venue match might struggle to attract crowds for a new trophy.
It could be given a Welsh name. Or called the Welsh Super
Shield. Or other names could include, the Prince of Wales Super Cup, or the Senedd
Cymru Cup.
If a team win the Welsh League, and Welsh Cup, then the runner up of the Welsh League can take one of the places. Or the winners of the Welsh League Cup could take one of the places.
Perhaps the label of the Welsh Super Cup has already been taken. So maybe a Welsh version of a Community Shield, or German Super Cup would need a different name to Welsh Super Cup. But there are plenty of naming possibilities. The main thing is to have trophy where the WELSH LEAGUE Champions play the WELSH CUP winners.
